A lovely little (9inch) walnut timepiece alarm with balance wheel escapement C1870 by Clerke, London.
The carriage clock shaped case is spectacularly veneered with the finest walnut. There is beveled glass to the sides, a top glass to view the escapement, a brass carrying handle and small pad feet.
The well-made movement has four turned pillars, balance wheel escapement and an alarm set on the backplate. The 3 ½” silvered dial has its original hands and a brass bezel.
Height: 9” (23cms) handle down
Width: 7” (18cms)
Depth: 5” (13cms)
There are several Clerkes working in London at this period. This clock is obviously by one who was making for the top end of the market with its exceptional case and fine balance wheel escapement.
