The spectacular domed top case has brass flambe finials, side carrying handles, side and back frets, caryatid front columns, front glass edging and bracket feet. The fine marquetry is set into ebony on the case front, sides and top.
The 7” dial has corner and arch spandrels, silvered strike-silent and chapter rings and original hands. The 8-day movement has 4 large turned pillars, heavy plates, 3 chain fussee`s anchor escapement, chimes the ¼`s on 8 bells and the hours on one. The pendulum has an engraved star, above bob regulation and a holdfast. The backplate is beautifully engraved with a floral border and centre decoration and is signed along the bottom “J.C.Jennens, London”.
John Creed Jennens, a maker of fine chiming clocks was born in 1822. He was working in Birmingham from 1845 – 53 and then later to Great Sutton St, Clerkenwell, London from 1863 – 1883.
