The frame has a hook & spikes, a beautifully engraved dial with original hand, a 1” chapter ring and alarm setting disc and engraved dolphin frets, the front one being fully signed.
The 12-hour duration movement has a balance wheel verge escapement, a countwheel operated hour strike on a bell and an alarm set on the backplate (not connected). The movement has good metal and wheelwork with tapered arbors.
Thomas Wheeler a celebrated early maker was apprenticed to Nicholas Coxeter in 1648, was a member of the clockmakers company from 1656 – 94. Extensive literature and illustrations of his work can be seen in “ Lantern Clocks” by Brian Loomes and “ English Lantern Clocks” by George White.
